I've moved my last comment into a new thread. Hopefully these new posts start new discussions. They can help both open up new thoughts, and organize major themes.
Now is the time to give your thoughts and comments.......blog away!!
we had a very interesting meeting this afternoon.....i encourage everyone to make the meeting next tuesday.
We talked about alot of things including trying to answer the questions...'What is studio Culture'
Some answers were
It is Inclusive
It is Creative
It provides a helping hand
It is a group dynamic
It offers critique
It gives different points of view
It searches for beauty
It has a value system: 'treat your classmates how you want to be treated'
Gate used a great metaphor....Studio Culture at its best is like a Soccer Game. It is competitive, Fun, and It is fair because everyone knows the rules.
I love this idea of a 'Fair Game'
How can studio be a Fair Game. There might be winners and losers on the boards, but everyone plays, everyone learns, everyone looks forward to the next game.....
So my new question is: What are the rules of the Studio Culture Game?

to add 2 more ingredients to the SC gumbo,
i'd like to add, first, the quote from the speaker I heard in DC from the DANA Foundation about Brain Research:
'a school is the place where
the brain learns how to learn.'
the other comes from another speaker, Eric Booth, he teaches at Juilliard.
his lecture, THE HABITS OF MIND OF CREATIVE ENGAGEMENT has something to offer, i believe, if SC at its best is about the cultivation and nurturance of these habits of mind:
here they are:
- generating multiple ideas and solutions
- sustaining inner atmosphere of exploration
- using one's own voice
- trusting one's own judgements
- formulating good questions amd problems
- improvising
- finding humor
- crafting
- making choices based on a variety of criteria
- inquiring skillfully
- persisting
- self-assessing
- reflecting metacognitively
- thinking analogically
- willingly suspending disbelief
- observing intentionally
- going back and forth between parts and wholes
- trying on multiple points of view
-working with others
- tapping and following instrinsic motivation
for the question of what are the rules of studio culture game.
i will say sharing should be included in that. However, this sharing is not only the material but also about helping each other. You should share your idea, your knowledge or even your feeling with your studio. Then instead of being only one success, we will have more and more. Moreover, I am pretty sure that the more you share, the more you know exactly about what you are thinking. Another thing is that the real competition is not when you are in school but it is when you go out to work and you have to compete with other schools. In school you should be competitive just because you have to improve yourself both physical( studio work ) and mental (friendship in studio )
studio culture RULES are simply based on common sense. one knows how to treat others as they would like to be treated. some rules that i believe are followed include:
-safety first! be careful.
-being open minded toward opinions.
-communicating with as many individuals as possible to learn new thoughts and ways.
-giving/recieving a helping hand (sharing).
-respecting, of course.
-bringing a positive mood, no negativity bc noone needs the attitude.
-guiding eachother.
-etc etc etc.......
studio cultures are responsibility,
maturity,sharing,learning, participation,awareness, happiness
In the last meeting, we talked some about many ways to organize the studio space to get a sense of community by using many different precedents. I would say our opening space is also workable pretty well to encourage the participation. However, I just have a question in my mind where the common space for fletcher is. it should be the place that people can gather together. the courtyard might be the answer but it might be better if we have more seating sets in that space to encourage people to hang out over there not just for smoking nor looking from the catwalk. In an architecture school in Thailand, we usaully have a big coutyard as the center of the building or of the space. We might use that for playing a small soccer game, having gathering activity or even getting drunk together. Most of them are usually surrounded by a canteen or coffee shop.
Studio culture is Getting messy, Happiness, Community, Playing, Exploration, Learning
annika , I like the word " exploration" I think it is the good way to go. We can explore both for education and lives, while we are living together in Fletcher.
'studio culture' is the voice of the individualists that comprise a studio. these people speak with each other and learn from one another with open minds. this is carried across with grace and willingness to hear what another has to offer without permitting pre-existing barriers to disengage future encounters. the group dynamic can be made possible by expressing beliefs with a respectful, knowledgeable, and even tone. and even when people get feisty and defensive, it should be understood that PEOPLE REACT when impassioned by their dealings with this major, and oftentimes it is awesome to remember that we care that much about the evolution of architecture. patience is a constant centering point in education and in relationships with peers and professors. I LOVE MY STUDIO! <3 <3 <3
