let us begin

OK
thanks, hans.

lets begin by documenting here some of the ideas that came out at yesterday's meeting:

drew: we need to find ways to introduce 1st year students to rest of student body.
Perhaps an event at the beginning, like a welcoming reception.

mark: spontaneous acts of consciousness raising.

ways to bring the campus to fletcher?

questions asked were....

what is studio culture?
It is a group culture, it is social, it is a community that drives us to learn, to develop, to collaborate...

what are the responsibilities of the professors to create, assist, inform the studio culture?

What are the responsibilities of the students to create, assist, inform the studio culture.

Hi, my thought is that design teachers should give their opinions on material types and how to get them. also help new comers in detail (especially those who are struggling).

Studio culture
02/07/07

organize studio’s tables

- Divide some unused first year tables and switch with the third year studio
- Have a big common space for model table
- An example from Virginia tech, they have a couple of fifth year students in each studio

- Social activities, in Flethcer

- Have a party in first day of class to socialize between each studio and freshmen
- comment board and blog
- Encourage architectural participation between each studio, ex. Sketch up workshop, model making suggestion
- Sense of community

- Social activity, outside Fletcher

- Bring some activities on campus such as performance to show in Fletcher or take some activities in studio to show outside, for ex. exhibition or studio presentation

we had a very interesting meeting this afternoon.....i encourage everyone to make the meeting next tuesday.

We talked about alot of things including trying to answer the questions...'What is studio Culture'

Some answers were
It is Inclusive
It is Creative
It provides a helping hand
It is a group dynamic
It offers critique
It gives different points of view
It has a value system: 'treat your classmates how you want to be treated'

Gate used a great metaphor....Studio Culture at its best is like a Soccer Game. It is competitive, Fun, and It is fair because everyone knows the rules.

I love this idea of a 'Fair Game'
How can studio be a Fair Game. There might be winners and losers on the boards, but everyone plays, everyone learns, everyone looks forward to the next game.....

So my new question is: What are the rules of the Studio Culture Game?

sorry to have missed yesterday's meeting.

gate, thanks for your great ideas and comments.
also, 'fair play' is such a great analog for SC at its best!

somehat related, yesterday's speaker at the conference i am attending said these two things:

–a school is the place where the brain is taught how to learn

–a word to the wise is sufficient

This idea came to me, Why not select a few 2nd or 3th year design students and assign them to a 1st year student for experienced advice and insight on what's expected of them?

this is my first opportunity to post anything, school and family have me cornered.

carlo, that's a great idea (mentoring). i heard over KRVS today that the office of diversity on campus has a similar and very successful program. perhaps, we could learn something...

now that I know how to post, i would like to respond and add to current ideas.
first, at the first studio culture meeting, there was talk about how some activities are performed at various universities. what i began to think about was the fact that these activities could be seen as an exercise. a strengthening exercise for the collective consciousness. wouldn't it be interesting to feel like we are all part of a whole, like organs in a body where every action, either physical or mental is for the benefit of the whole. Utopian or Reality? you make the call. My take on it is, Reality is what you make it, what should we make?

here is an idea, which grew out of my 5th year theory studies of Marshal McCluen author of the book "understanding media, the extentions of man." Just a few years ago when I got here, night time in the studio was very different, Mainly the noise level. Loud music, although sometimes distracting, creates a space, sometimes comfortable and sometimes not, however a space was present. Then came the I pod. Every one every where has this new medium, including myself. things are changing. the spaces which once involved several people now have the dimensions of one individuals head. but this epedemic is everywhere. we, in my opinion, are entering a new era. Maybe, because of less distractions we students and other i pod user will be more productive, however, my position on the matter is that a fundamental human need is missing. It will be a matter of time before we figure out how to regain the necessary human condition of socialization. The blog may be the answer. did the i pod kill the night time studio experience, or not?

MENTORING: our major is based on time management i dont believe selecting a mentor for 1st year would help too much. besides one mentor is just one view to the 1st year's help. fletcher as a whole needs to be eachother's mentor. maybe have more gatherings inviting every year to attend, im sure a conversation will burst among 1st-5th students. maybe even a 1st year's view may help a 4th year's.

COMBINING DESKS: im not too sure if meshing desks of different year students together is the best idea. different levels of maturity and experience all put side by side may affect in a bad way. the better way is maybe not desks but classes. have some 1st year sit and watch some 2nd year classes to experience and learn what their projects are about.

Subject: Mentoring

Instead of having each a mentor,
how about 1st year students have a mentoring orientation.

Carlo said...

Idk Todd, It just wouldn't feel as personal (or as involved for that matter...)

Shouldn't some of the ID and Interior students also be involved in these meetings? To me studio culture also includes the interaction between the different majors. Maybe we could learn something different from another perspective by inviting the other disciplines from fletcher to our meetings. this was just an idea but since our goal is to define studio culture it should give everybody in fletcher a change to contribute and talk about their experiences.

Hi!

I think that giving students the chance to mingle is a great idea... i don't know bout moving tables but having one general space to work is a great idea! Also having a reception at the beginning of each semmester would serve as a sort of icebreaker for everyone.

Carlo said...

Ice breaker indeed allison
